Araz School of Percussion's instructor, Araz Nayeb Pashayee, will present a highly educational and entertaining Tombak workshop at a beginner level to music enthusiasts of all ages. The workshop will contain the following:
  1) Short group performance (by school members)
 2) Theory part:  
- The art of Tombak playing and its brief evolutionary history - What is Tombak made of?  
- Introduction of some common rhythmic patterns and styles on Tombak 
3) Practical part (with participation of volunteering audience):  
- How to hold the Tombak 
- Most basic strokes used in Tombak playing: Tom and Bak 
- Playing one or two simple rhythmic patterns in which everyone has a chance to get involved either by playing them on the drum (using the basic strokes learned) or by clapping.

American-Iranian Chef Ariana Bundy is a TV Chef and cookbook author of 'Pomegranates & Roses: My Persian family Recipes' (Simon & Schuster UK) and 'Sweet Alternative' (Conran-Octopus UK). In her cooking demonstration she will share some of her top Persian recipes from her Pomegranates and Roses cookbook. Ariana shows us how to cut corners and find shortcuts making these ancient recipes all the while using only natural fresh ingredients and less oil than traditionally used. Animation Workshop

Kevin Langdale and Ann Marie Fleming will be giving a 3 hr. crash-course animation workshop where participants will be introduced to visual storytelling for the screen, basic traditional animation principles and techniques including stop motion and drawn animation – as well as getting a sneak peak at some of the animation being created for WINDOW HORSES, an animated feature that takes place at a poetry festival in Shiraz.
Each participant is asked to bring along an iPad or mobile device downloaded with the Norman McLaren Workshop, an NFB app available for 99 cents at https://www.nfb.ca/film/mclarens_workshop .
There are demos of techniques on here, as well as the entire collection of McLaren’s groundbreaking films. Also, please download this free stop motion app, iMotion Studio https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/stop-motion-studio/id441651297?mt=8. We encourage people to experiment before coming to the workshop.
Each participant will be creating part of a collaborative film and will be responsible for uploading their section into a Dropbox folder, which edited by our team. There also may be the opportunity for making a stop motion film as a group.
Taymaz Saba, who is designing sound and music for Window Horses, will score the final pieces, which we will put up on Vimeo.

A Taste of Camp Ayandeh

This workshop is open to high school students and is segmented in two parts: Iranian Identity and Youth Leadership.
Inspired by IAAB's Camp Ayandeh, its annual summer high school leadership camp, participants will leave with a stronger sense of self and their identity as youth of Iranian heritage. Participants will also gain leadership skills and have a better sense of their leadership strengths and areas of growth. This workshop is fun and interactive!
